LEVEL DESIGN
This is a speculative project for Taipei Street Center, which involves level design, concept research, architecture, urban planning, and environment design. It’s also a rethinking of subculture’s faces in today’s society.
Intro
Nowadays, street dance becomes one of the most popular dance styles in the world. Unlike other dance styles, the spirit of street dance allows dancers to walk out of traditional stages and find their own stages in the city.
The term “street dance” today is not only a dancing activity for dancers, but also a full process that involves music making, training, performance, costume, and exhibition. In this project, I tried to create a new form of performance and training center for street dancers in the city that gathered all of their needs while they could still find their original spirit of liberty.
The project used the space elements derived from the analysis of a representative dancers’ movements, and different prototypes of street dance performance in a city environment as spacial notation to choreograph on the site.
The site is located at an abandoned park nearby one of the most crowded walking streets in Taipei. Although people seldom use the space, there are still many shops and studios surrounding and serving dancing activities.
Concepts
To develop the project, there are were 4 kinds of main elements being used for the space choreograph as architecture ways.
1. Space Nodes--Lighting for public activities
2. Space Frames--Structure system
3. Space Forms--Buildings for indoor use
4. Space Rhythms--Main circulation
Design
Base on the real street activities and requierments, there are multiple programs in the dancing center - space for battle and dancing practice, the temporary performance support on the structure, and the street spaces for party and flash mob.
During day time, residents and tourists could participate in the activities that happen in the
building.
During night time, the lighting system provided safe public spaces and defined another kinds of activity usage.
